Introduction

In America, our society is shaped by racism. Racism is a form of discrimination that stems from belief in the superiority or inferiority based on race. It comes in many forms, including prejudice, stereotyping, oppression and violence. Racism is not a new phenomenon; it has existed for centuries in human societies all around the world.

What is Racism?

ree

Racism is a form of discrimination that involves prejudice against an individual based on their race. Racism can be expressed in numerous ways, such as through violence or disenfranchisement. It is important to note that not all discrimination is racism, but all racism is discrimination. This means that there are other forms of discrimination such as sexism, ageism, homophobia, transphobia and xenophobia among many others.

How are Racism and Discrimination Connected?

Many people believe that racism and discrimination are two separate things. Racism is when a person or group is discriminated against for their skin color, ethnic background, or nationality. Discrimination can be any form of mistreatment or unjustified exclusion from full participation in society based on sex, age, race, disability etc. However, they are not as different as it may seem. Racist behavior often leads to discrimination which in turn leads to stereotypes. Stereotypes can lead people to assume that one group has a set of common characteristics which apply to every member of that group. This can result in negative associations with members of an entire group even if these beliefs are not true for everyone in that group.

Examples of Racism and Discrimination

ree

One form of racism is when a person is discriminated against because they are from a different country. For example, in many countries around the world, people who are not from that country cannot own land or property. In America, it is illegal to discriminate against someone because they are pregnant or have children, but this is not the case in other countries. There are also many instances of discrimination based on skin color in countries like India and South Africa. The way that people with darker skin tones are treated can be seen by looking at current events in these areas. They have less access to education and healthcare than those with lighter skin tones do.

In Conclusion

It is easy to see discrimination as a different form of racism. They both have an underlying power dynamic, they both have a negative effect on those who are discriminated against, and they are both wrong. Racism is more overt than discrimination though, while discrimination can be subtle or even unintentional. If we want to create a society that is more inclusive, we need to work on recognizing when someone is being discriminated against so that we can stand up for them in any way possible.
