What are Nutrients?

Food contains nutrients, which have positive effects on health. There are two categories of nutrients: macronutrients, such as proteins, lipids, and carbs; and micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals. To maintain our body operating as it should, the two groups collaborate. Enzymes, which hasten cellular reactions, are made in the body with the assistance of micronutrients. Chemical reactions must take place for the body to function properly; otherwise, the body cannot function.

What are the different types of nutrients?

There are three different types of nutrients: macronutrients, micronutrients, and phytonutrients. Macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, and proteins) provide energy. Micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) are essential for normal body functions. Phytonutrients are substances found in plants that have health-promoting benefits. Food also contains fiber as well as other substances that affect health but do not provide any nutrition to the body.

How do nutrients affect our health?

Nutrients are substances that are necessary for the body to grow, develop, maintain itself, or perform some other biological function. You can get these nutrients from food and drinks. Some of them include proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants like beta-carotene and lycopene. The process of digesting food is what converts them into a form that the body can absorb through your digestive tract. When you eat a healthy diet with plenty of different kinds of foods every day in appropriate amounts you're giving your body all the nutrients it needs to work properly. However, if you don't eat enough healthy foods because they're expensive or hard to find then your diet might not be providing all the nutrients you need.

What are some common nutrient deficiencies?

There are several common nutrient deficiencies in today's society. A few are iron, vitamin D, and magnesium. A lack of iron can lead to anemia which is when the blood doesn't have enough healthy red blood cells. Iron deficiency can be caused by periods of heavy bleeding during menstruation, pregnancy, or childbirth, heavy or long-term bleeding due to hemorrhoids, ulcers, or certain cancers like stomach cancer. Another common nutrient deficiency is vitamin D which helps the body use calcium to strengthen bones and teeth. Vitamin D deficiency can be caused by spending too much time indoors without enough sun exposure, not consuming dairy products (which are fortified with vitamin D), liver disease, Crohn's disease, celiac disease, or inflammatory bowel syndrome.

How can we get enough nutrients in our diet?

Nutrients are the parts of food that are important for our health. There are many different nutrients, including protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water. It can be difficult to make sure we get all the nutrients we need in our diet because they're found in a variety of foods. The easiest way to make sure we're getting enough nutrients is to eat a healthy diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein sources like beans or fish, plus dairy or non-dairy milk products.
